If you're a member of the ShelbySuperCars team that created the SSC Ultimate Aero it can get you the production car speed record. Guinness World RecordsTM has certified that the SSC is the fastest production car in the world. The record is obtained by averaging the top speed of two passes from opposite directions. The official speed record is 256.18 mph. The SSC Ultimate Aero shattered the Koenigsegg CCR's previous official record by over 15 mph, and the Bugatti Veyron's unofficial record by over 3.5 mph. As fast as 256 plus mph is, wind tunnel tests suggest the SSC is capable of top speeds of over 270 mph.

Take a practice lap with Peter Sadler in his Ford GT 40 while preparing for the 1969 24 of Le Mans. In comparison to the 1956 lap in Mike Hawthorn's D-Type Jaguar, Sadler's GT 40's much quicker, and the obstacles one had to watch out for didn't include pedestrians, bicyclists, and motor vehicles driven by the general public.

Le Mans winner, Mike Hawthorn takes us along for a practice lap in his D-Type Jaguar while preparing for the 1956 Le Mans race. In 1956 practice laps at Le Mans had the added hazard of having to dodge pedestrians, bicyclists, and regular road traffic. Fortunately the great Hawthorn managed to miss them all and get around the course at a good clip.

Forward thinking Swedish ultra car maker Koenigsegg, has created a model that runs on E85 biofuel and manages to produce over 1000 horsepower and 780 ft-lbs of torque. While the beautiful CCX-R won't produce a significant reduction in carbon emissions overall, it is definitely a step in the right direction and reinforces the fact that production cars do not have to run on petro to perform well.

What do you do when you want to celebrate your company's 100th birthday? In the case of Ford they looked back to one of their greatest creations, the Ford GT, and created a limited edition super car that does 205 MPH (actually it's a little faster than that) and even gets pretty good gas mileage!
